It is quite the visual overload from beginning to the end (and the book is 352 pages) The book, visually, is incredible rich even if sometimes you will need to rest your eyes. The imagery is great, with many japanese motifs and elements, and also lots of nature photography: plants, flowers, etc… If you are into japanese culture you will find lots of familiar faces: Yayoi Kusama, Kuriyama Chiaki, etc. As you can expect from usual japanese photography book standards, quality of paper, printing and binding is all top-notch. The book is thick and heavy and comes in a Cardboard slipcase. I got it last year at International Nagoya Design Center. I kinda liked the first one (very similar in style to her photography) but I did not like the second at all. I always liked her pictures, not so much her movies (she has been a 2 times director as of now, Sakuran and Helter Skelter). She has worked for the most important magazines in Japan and abroad but I discovered her in the greatest clothes and pictures and pretty girls magazine, the deceased Smart Girls (which also featured the work of Yasumasa Yonehara and Naito Keisuke)

Her photography is quite personal, full of saturated colors, lots of details, elements, sometimes even overloaded. Ninagawa is a world-famous photographer from Japan. Also it has been published in France by Paninni, so you can get it from there too. The book is all in japanese, but there is not so much text. It was 3000 yen, which is not bad at all, so if you like Urasawa I am sure you will do the right thing. I had no idea that this book existed so when I found it in Tokyo it was both a surprise and an instant purchase. You can easily spend a few hours just trying to find out what manga and books are filling his shelves. Pictures of artist´s studios are always fascinating and here you have quite a lot of Urasawa´s workplace. Quality of the printing and paper is up to usual japanese standards, which is quite high. You can see a hint of Moebius here, some Otomo there, but always with that nice personality Urasawa imprints in all his works. You will find art, illustrations, designs, sketches, enlarged panels, etc, from all his manga, including Yawara, Happy!, Master Keaton, etc. The book follows Urasawa career, from the very beginning right up to Pluto, so it covers a lot of ground. Not only art, also photographs, interviews, and even a copy of a manga Urasawa did when he was young. It is a pretty nice hardcover, 200+ pages book where we can find lots of stuff. Manben is an artbook showcasing his illustration work and also some of his comic book work.

He is like a manga superstar now and every new work by him is always an important event. He has been translated into many languages and also adapted into anime, movies and what not. I really love his style but what really draws me into his work is the incredible quality of the scripts. Naoki Urasawa is a japanese manga artist and manga teacher known mostly for his long running comic books Monster and 20th Century Boys. The three books are definitely recommended and don´t forget to keep an eye to what the Lost Art Books line will bring us in the future. It was such a discovery for me, as I love this kind of line art and had no idea about his existence. The first book is all about drawings and the second one includes a lot of color stuff. Kaluta, Jesse Hamm and Alexander Kunkel, and great production values. With lots of new materials, (there is just a little overlap between these books and the Dover one), texts by Michael Wm.

Some of the drawings come with text, the original joke or the title.įor many years this was one of the few books I could find about him but in 2012 a new publishing company, Picture This Press, launched an intriguing series of “Lost Art Books”, 2 of them all about Kley. Lots of intricate detail, excellent pen work and great mastery of anatomy, of both human and animal. It contains 2 sketchbooks, 100 drawings each, and it is around 128 pages. All black and white, it comes with an excellent written introduction about Kley, definitely recommended reading. First published in 1960, it is readily available in regular retailers and costs around 13 bucks. The Dover book is consistent with the quality and usual style of the company.

Now a couple of other books are available, so let´s check them. I really did not have any knowledge about this guy until I found a Dover book a few years ago. He was a master of pen and ink technique and he was also excellent in color work. He was satirist and was not afraid to include dangerous political references in his art. Heinrich Kley was a german artists who became famous mostly for his line work.
